Neurology

Dr. Gowoon Son is molecular and cellular neuroscientist, and received her PhD from Maastricht University in the Netherlands and DGIST in South Korea in 2021. Her doctoral work focused on the neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease in the olfactory system. She identified the olfactory sensory neurons that generate amyloid-beta protein, which causes anosmia in Alzheimer’s disease, by using both genetically modified mouse models and human tissues. In addition, she discovered a potential non-invasive biomarker using human nasal fluid. Her previous exploration in the early symptoms and onset mechanism of Alzheimer’s disease inspired Gowoon to join the Grinberg Lab in September 2021, where she is investigating a mechanism of sleep disturbances in tau-driven pathology in subcortical and brainstem nuclei in Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
