Postdoctoral Position in Sleep Dysfunction and Neurodegenerative Diseases
Job Summary
The fellow will conduct research investigating the pathological changes in subcortical sleep-wake nuclei that occur in Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies. The fellow will obtain advanced training in neuroanatomy, neurohistology and quantitative human neuropathology in order to facilitate experiments geared toward understanding the biological basis of sleep disturbances presented clinically in patients with AD and related disorders. The environment will further provide opportunities to pursue correlations between brain pathology and antemortem clinical or imaging findings.
Required qualifications
PhD in neuroscience or related fields and a career interest in neurodegenerative disease. Preference will be given to applicants with prior training in mammalian anatomy and quantitative stereology and a capacity to blend neuroanatomy with molecular biological approaches, but all interested applicants are encouraged to apply.

Postdoc position to study spatiotemporal relationships between gliosis, synapses loss, and atrophy in human neurodegenerative diseases
We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow who will be integral in a multidisciplinary effort for developing novel PET markers for synapsis in humans brains for use in neurodegenerative disease.
Working with neuropathologists, neurologists, and neuroscientists, you will help understand the spatiotemporal relationship between gliosis, synapse loss, and atrophy in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders to validate candidate PET tracer in postmortem human tissue, using immunohistochemistry, quantitative neuropathology, and imaging analysis.
This position presents an outstanding training experience for a candidate who wishes to grow a career in the neurodegenerative disease field. Successful candidates should be scientifically motivated self-starters and comfortable working in a highly productive academic environment.
The candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team as part of an academia-pharma alliance that brings together world-class researchers and clinicians to speed up new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. The primary appointment will be at the Grinberg Lab (http://grinberglab.ucsf.edu), Memory and Aging Center at UCSF
PREFERED Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Neurosciences, Biology, molecular biology, physiology, or related fields, and have first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals
- career interest in neurodegenerative diseases
- Experience with microscopy
- Experience with quantitative pathology
- Experience with microscopic imaging analysis
- Prior training in mammalian anatomy is a plus
- The candidates should be creative thinkers, organized, demonstrate excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
